Lillian emailed me with a very blunt question, Can you handle six women for a weekend?….
From Brisbane, Sydney and Perth, the ladies made their way to Clare Valley. The girls are long term friends scattered across this big country and Clare became the focus of the annual Girls weekend. I was given honorary womanhood for the weekend and away we went.
Two days of Clare Valley food and wine, two days of laughter, inclusive of an afternoon of raucous laughter at Skillogalee Restaurant.
Relaxation and catch ups, two days of no kids, husbands or distractions, just the girls. My brief was to create a unique authentic tour, a Clare Valley experience full of memories to take home. To take the ladies to the wineries they would enjoy the most, including a stunning lookout view at sunset. They came, they bought, they revelled. The Clare Valley weekend lingers on as the ladies share a Clare Valley wine at home reminiscing the Girls Weekend in Clare.
The girls stayed in the thoroughly charming town of Mintaro, noted as being one of the regions most captivating and picturesque villages. Mintaro is home to Martindale Hall, The Mintaro Maze, Magpie n Stump, Reillys Wines/Restaurant and Mintaro Wines.
Lillian was kind enough to write the words below.
This photo was taken at the Nilpena Station fossil site. The site was included in the National Heritage List in 2007 and is the subject of Sir David Attenborough’s ‘First Life’ BBC series, and are a core aspect of the SA Government’s 2018 nomination of the Flinders Ranges for World Heritage Listing.
Many are lured to the Flinders to visit Wilpena Pound, a gigantic amphitheater created through erosion over millions of years, travel the dusty roads in the shadows of ancient cliffs, spectacular gorges and sheltered creeks, so much to explore and soak up dwarfed by the size and the majestic beauty of one of the worlds oldest mountain ranges.
When On Tour with Mr Willson you discover and see sites you may never find by yourself. Rare and ancient fossils on the side of the road, the Acraman layer of sedimentary rock from a 2-4klm diameter meteorite which impacted 300klms east in the Gawler Rangers and laid down ejecta 4-500mm thick, identified and confirmed as Gawler Rages Volcanics. in the Flinders. Discover the places Hans Heysen loved painting, see Yellow Footed rock wallabies arching for the Golden Spike, a fault line in the cliff, the Golden Spike, the only geographical time line spike in the Southern Hemisphere. The Spike denotes the change in time from the Cryogenian ice age ended and the Ediacaran Period began. The spike is embedded into tillite or glacial sediment. It was these glacial remnants of glaciers floating in the then ocean that inspired Sir Douglas Mawson to travel to the Antarctica.
These tangible historic markers can all be found in the comfort and safety of a tour. We stay at the Parachilna Hotel and or Rawnsley Park, we visit Blinman the Highest town in SA. The Jesuits Brothers from St Aloysius Church, Sevenhills used to ride a horse from Clare to Blinman every 3 months to conduct services and rites for their flock. The Blinman Mine is a must see, so many things to show you.
Nilpena Station and Nilpena Fossil sites are an absolute must if visiting the Flinders. Nilpena, a working cattle station, boasting an amazing diversity of desert landscapes, substantial stone station buildings, valuable relics of early European settlement that have been used in many films including Rabbit Proof Fence. The magnificent stone woolshed boasts a floor featuring slabs from the 550 million old Ediacaran seafloor.
555 million years ago the desert backdrop of the Flinders Ranges was submerged below shallow tropical seas, and ocean floors inhabited by Earth’s first large, complex marine organisms – the Ediacara biota. The Nilpena Fossil site is considered by scientists from all over the globe to be one of the most intact & rich Ediacara fossil sites in the world, representing a significant time period from our geological heritage. Regardless of an interest in geology or not, this aa a fascinating place on earth, a place and time believed to be where Life on Earth began.
This is idea for a group of 10 – 12 people and can be tailored to suit your schedule.
