Clare Valley the History, the Stories, Food n Wine

An insider’s guide to Clare and its
surrounding regions.

DAY ONE: ADELAIDE TO CLARE VIA KAPUNDA AND MINTARO.

From the Adelaide CBD we set course for Kapunda, the oldest copper mining town in Australia. We’ll visit the mine site and check out the mansion of the Cattle King, Sir Henry Kidman, who was one of the world’s most prominent landowners.

Pressing onward we wind through the Gilbert Valley and into the back roads of Mintaro, where we’ll visit the jewel of the Mid-North, Martindale Hall, a 140-year-old Georgian-style mansion that featured in iconic Australian film Picnic at Hanging Rock.

Then discover the quaint township of Mintaro. We’ll walk the pretty streets and enjoy a lunch showcasing quality wine and local produce.

Then it’s time to visit one of the bright new stars on the Clare wine scene, Hill River Estate. You’ll be taken by the Jaeschke family’s farmhouse hospitality and entertaining stories.

After a busy day, chill out with a relaxing evening at your accommodation.

DAY TWO: BURRA

We hit the road at 9am for the historic copper town of Burra. We host a fully-guided tour of this charming town, as we unlock its age-old secrets with the unique passport key. The key is included in your tour fee and grants you instant access to the town’s most intriguing sites, including the Redruth Gaol, Unicorn Brewery, the Monster Mine and the Miners Dugouts. The Dugouts were home to Elizabeth Woolcox, the last woman hanged in South Australia in 1873.

There’ll also be plenty of time for coffees, lunch and even some retail therapy in the towns eclectic mix of cafes, homewares and antique stores.

We’ll have you back at your accommodation by 5pm, when you can freshen up and prepare for dinner at the fabulous Seed Winehouse and Kitchen in Clare.

DAY THREE: CLARE

A touch of culture to start days three, as we visit the Clare Valley Art Gallery, home to a diverse range of inspiring indigenous art. Gain a unique insight into aboriginal artists and Central Australian Culture, with a focus on works from the Utopia Community.

Then it’s time for one of the real highlights of your trip – a visit to the revered Sevenhill Cellars, the first winery in the Clare Valley. Built by the Society of Jesuits in 1851, it’s a sacred site of seductive wine and spiritual character. It’s home to some of the world’s oldest vines, which were tended by the men of faith who still lie in the on-site crypt. Visit the church and Weikert cottage and afterwards enjoy a private tasting of Sevenhill’s award-winning wines.

We’ll then cross the main road for lunch in the idyllic grounds of the gorgeous Skillogalee restaurant.

By then it’ll be time to head home. We’ll have you back in the Adelaide CBD by 5.30pm.
